The system was so great for playing all of my video files (minus mkv) without a hiccup and it worked extremely well with my 7.1 setup in my media room. The conundrum I am now facing is what to get to replace it. I don't really play console games anymore and so I have a hard time justifying the money for a PS4 or XBox 1.

At this point, I am asking, do I even need a game console anymore? Are there BluRay players out there that stream video files well?

I know Samsung's two higher end models play video files and are well reviewed on Amazon but most reviews don't mention much about that feature. Future-proofing is also a consideration. My Sharp 46' Aquos is 7 years old and I am starting to look into bigger, more glorious TVs so a player that could possibly do a good job at 4k upscaling may not be a bad idea but not anything that is necessarily a must have seeing that I don't think the upscaling is where it needs to be just yet and I don't plan on buying a TV in the extremely near future. I'd suggest building a xbmc powered htpc, or getting two devices. A low end bluray player and a media player.

You'd still come out well under the cost of a console. The WDTV live plays everything I throw at it, including mkv and DTS MA audio. It will find my movies on my network drive and play them.

But the hardware hasn't seen an update in a while and the software is clunky. There may be better devices, but most devices these days are streaming boxes, and they don't have good codec support or play local/network files. When I do it over I will just build a system that will play everything, and put a bluray drive in. Lifehacker has some good build instructions for under $500. I second the two devices concept if you've got stored video files. I just picked up an Amazon Fire TV over the weekend and installed XBMC on there. It's played everything I've thrown at it over my network, plus you get all the normal streaming apps.
